To help your tooth heal and stay protected, follow these guidelines.
Post-Procedure Guidelines
- Contact your dentist to schedule your final filling or crown. We prefer this be completed within three weeks after your root canal, but it can be completed as soon as possible.
- Don’t chew on the treated tooth until your final crown is placed. Chewing on it could break the tooth, which could jeopardize saving it.
- The tooth and area are typically sore for up to one week. Typical symptoms include a sore tooth and gums, a dull ache and soreness when opening or closing your mouth. If you have more severe pain three to five days after treatment or develop swelling, contact our office or the emergency phone number provided.
- You can brush the treated area as usual. If some of the temporary filling material wears away or comes out, don’t worry. This is normal and not a problem.
Over the counter pain medication
- For the first three days, take pain medication continually, then switch to taking it as needed.
- Take either ibuprofen (such as Advil, Motrin), 600 mg every 6 hours, or acetaminophen (such as Tylenol), 650 mg every 6 hours.
- For more moderate pain, you can take ibuprofen and acetaminophen together.
